O RTC na WebRTC significa comunicações em tempo real, tecnologia que permite transmissão de áudio/vídeo e compartilhamento de dados entre navegador clientes (pares). Como um conjunto de padrões, a WebRTC fornece a qualquer navegador com à capacidade de compartilhar dados de aplicativos e realizar teleconferências de ponto a ponto, sem a necessidade de instalar plug-ins ou software de terceiros.

Os componentes WebRTC são acessados com APIs JavaScript. Atualmente em desenvolvimento estão a API Network Stream, que representa um fluxo de dados de áudio ou vídeo, e a API PeerConnection, que permite que dois ou mais usuários se comuniquem entre navegadores. Também está em desenvolvimento uma API DataChannel que permite a comunicação de outros tipos de dados para jogos em tempo real, bate-papo de texto, transferência de arquivos e assim por diante.
